Scott S. Segal |
Scott S. Segal concentrates on representing catastrophically injured people in the areas of industrial accidents, personal injury, products liability and asbestos litigation. In 1998 Mr. Segal was inducted into the Inner Circle of Advocates. Membership in the Inner Circle of Advocates is limited to one hundred of the best plaintiffs' trial lawyers in the United States. In 1996 Mr. Segal was asked to become a member of the prestigious American Board of Trial Advocates. Mr. Segal is lead class counsel in the West Virginia fen phen class action suit Burch v. American Home Products. He has also been lead and co-lead counsel for West Virginia's tobacco litigation and in In Re: Asbestos Mass III, a Kanawha County Circuit Court case which resulted in the successful settlement of over 10,000 individual asbestos personal injury cases and in Re: Monongalia Mass II, which resulted in the successful settlement of several thousand more asbestos personal injury cases. Mr. Segal's Supreme court cases include Gentry v. Magnum, 466 S.E. 2d 171 (W.Va. 1995), in which the West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals set the standards for admissibility of expert witness opinions and Owens Corning Fiberglass Corporation v. Leonard Adams, et al., No. 92-844 (S.Ct. June 18, 1993), in which the United States Supreme Court let stand over 4.4 million dollars in punitive damages. In 1977, he received his BS from the University of Vermont in Burlington, Vermont and his JD in 1981 from West Virginia University College of Law in Morgantown, West Virginia. At Law School Mr. Segal was a member of the Moot Court Board, the National Appellate Competition Team and the National Trial Competition Team. He was also awarded Order of the Barristers and the Marlyn E. Lugar Best Advocate award. Mr. Segal has served as a member of the Civil Justice Reform Act Advisory Committee to the United States District Court for the Southern District of West Virginia and as a member of the Standing Committee Local Rules of the Southern District of West Virginia. He has taught numerous continuing legal education seminars in the state of West Virginia and throughout the country, in addition to co-authoring a legal scholarly publication in the West Virginia Law Review entitled Workplace Injury Litigation, 95 W. Va. L.Rev. 995 (1993). Mr. Segal and his wife, West Virginia
Supreme Court Justice Robin Jean Davis, are the founders of the Segal and
Davis Family Foundation, which support charitable causes benefiting
children and animals. |

Mark R. Staun |
Mark R. Staun has concentrated his practice over the past twelve years in the area of catastrophic personal injury litigation with an emphasis on industrial and mining accidents, medical negligence, aviation accidents and product liability. He has also been involved in numerous cases in both State and Federal Courts and before the West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals involving insurance coverage litigation. Mr. Staun's successful jury trials and settlements have involved claims against coal operators and company owners in commercial and workplace injury litigation, insurance companies, automobile manufacturers, and physicians and hospitals in medical negligence cases. Mr. Staun has taught numerous Continuing Legal Education seminars and has co-authored a legal scholarly publication in the West Virginia Law Review entitled Workplace Injury Litigation, 95 W.Va. L. Rev. 995 (1993). His cases before the West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals include the most recent case of Graham v. Wallace, 538 S.E.2d 730, (W.Va. 2000), , Erie Insurance, Property and Casualty Co. v. Pioneer Home Improvement, Inc., 526 S.E.2d 28 (W.Va.1999), Hamric v. Doe, 499 S.E.2d 619 (W.Va. 1997); Grayam v. Department of Health and Human Resources, 498 S.E.2d 12 (W.Va. 1997); Trent v. Cook, 482 S.E.2d 218 (W.Va. 1996); and Gentry v. Mangum, 466 S.E.2d 171 (W.Va. 1995). Mr. Staun received his Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration, Cum Laude, from the West Virginia University College of Business and Economics and his law degree from the West Virginia University College of Law. Samuel A. Hrko |
Samuel A. Hrko concentrates in
the areas of personal injury and products liability. He received a B.S.
degree in Chemistry from West Virginia State College in Institute, West
Virginia. While at State, Mr. Hrko was named to the First Team All West
Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference for three consecutive years
as well as earning All-American Honors as an offensive lineman. He earned
his law degree from the Ohio Northern University College of Law. While at
Ohio Northern, Mr. Hrko was inducted as a member of the Willis Society for
Legal Scholars. Mr. Hrko previously served a two year appointment as Law Clerk to the Honorable W. Craig Broadwater, United States District Judge for the Northern District of West Virginia. While working under Judge Broadwater, Mr. Hrko participated in numerous matters in both civil and criminal areas of law. Deborah L. McHenry |
Deborah L. McHenry concentrates
in the areas of personal injury, products liability and industrial
accidents representing people who have been severely injured. She received
her BA, Summa Cum Laude, from the University of Charleston, Charleston,
West Virginia in 1981 and received her JD in 1984 from the West Virginia
University College of Law where she achieved Order of the Coif. Ms.
McHenry was the Editor-in-Chief of the West Virginia Law Review and an
editorial board member of The Journal of College and University Law. Ms. McHenry most recently served as the Counsel to the West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals. She developed the Office of Counsel and implemented the Court's newest case management, review and presentation process. For a time, Ms. McHenry served in the dual capacity of Counsel and Clerk of the Court. Ms. McHenry was previously a Managing Deputy Attorney General where she had responsibility for consumer protection, civil rights, and antitrust litigation. She had primary responsibility for conducting the in-house portion of the State's tobacco litigation which resulted in the recovery of millions of dollars of State taxpayer funds spent to treat people with tobacco-related disease and illness. Ms. McHenry was also involved in litigating several fraudulent telemarketing and mail order schemes targeted at elderly and poor citizens which resulted in the return to individuals of millions of dollars in cash and the cancellation of debt. Ms. McHenry successfully handled and negotiated a settlement of an antitrust case against the providers of milk to county school systems that resulted in thousands of dollars to several counties. She serves on the West Virginia Supreme Court's Gender Fairness Task Force and was the Co-project Editor for the publication: Women and the Law: Am Legal Rights Handbook (1994). Victor S. Woods concentrates in
the areas of personal injury, products liability, industrial accidents,
and medical negligence. He graduated from the University of Chicago with a
bachelor’s degree in political science, studied urban planning at the
Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech), and
received his law degree from the West Virginia University College of Law.
While at West Virginia University, Mr. Woods was awarded the Order of the
Coif, which recognizes outstanding academic achievement, and served as
Associate Editor of the West Virginia Law Review. Prior to joining the firm, Mr. Woods was Assistant Attorney General for the State of West Virginia, where he was involved in a number of high-profile criminal and civil cases, including the State’s litigation against the tobacco industry. He also served as law clerk to the Honorable Warren R. McGraw, Justice of the Supreme Court of Appeals of West Virginia. Mr. Woods is admitted to practice law in all state and federal courts in West Virginia, and is a member of the of the West Virginia State Bar, Association of Trial Lawyers of America, and the West Virginia Trial Lawyers Association.
